Previously I spent 17 amazing years as the founder and CEO of Bodybuilding.com. During that time, I had the privilege of working with millions of people on their fitness journeys, witnessing firsthand the incredible power of dedication and the right approach to transforming bodies and lives!
I also saw how often people struggled.
They were confused about what to do, how to do it, and it made them question if they were wasting their time. There were so many differing opinions from people trying to sell books or fitness programs. Many would quit in frustration.
That experience, seeing what truly works for people on a massive scale, is the very foundation of Black Box VR. Everything we’ve implemented in the game, from the exercises you perform to the intensity and volume you experience each week, is directly based on the exercise guidelines we believe are most effective for achieving real results.
We understand that in the vast world of fitness information, you might encounter different ideas about what constitutes the “best” workout. We often hear from members who have come across various training philosophies and wonder if they should be doing something different. However, I want to assure you that the principles and progressive overload we’ve meticulously built into Black Box VR are firmly rooted in the latest exercise science. A close examination of the research consistently points to the effectiveness of the strategies we’ve implemented.
We haven’t thrown a bunch of random exercises into a VR world. Every choice has been deliberate.
We’ve purposely selected compound exercises – think squats, presses, rows – because they work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, ensuring a full-body workout that can be efficiently completed in a relatively short amount of time.
Beyond the exercise selection, we’ve meticulously considered the specific dose of exercise volume per week, ensuring you’re working your muscles sufficiently without overtraining. We’ve fine-tuned the exercise intensity levels to challenge you appropriately and drive adaptation. Our personalized progression algorithm automatically adjusts your resistance levels, ensuring you’re constantly pushing your limits in a safe and effective manner. We’ve even optimized rest intervals to allow for sufficient recovery while maintaining workout efficiency. And of course, through the in-game coaching, we provide guidance on exercise form, crucial for both safety and maximizing results.

If you’ve ever worked as a personal trainer, you know the drill. Clients often request modifications based on personal preference – “I don’t like that exercise,” or “can we take it a little easier today?” While we appreciate your preferences, sometimes what feels comfortable isn’t what’s most effective for driving change. And ultimately, the frustration of not seeing results sets in.
That’s why we’ve made the conscious decision not to allow members to arbitrarily control their own resistance or difficulty levels (within reason). While we understand the desire for control, in our experience, this often leads to individuals unintentionally sabotaging their progress. Without the guidance of proven principles like progressive overload and hitting appropriate intensities, the likelihood of achieving significant results diminishes. And frankly, if you’re not going to see results, then what’s the point?
More importantly, giving members complete control would essentially place the responsibility of exercise science expertise on their shoulders. A big part of what Black Box VR offers is the freedom from needing to be an exercise expert. You don’t need to spend hours researching the optimal workout split or debating the merits of different rep ranges. You can simply put on the headset, enter the arena, and play the game.
